Choosing A New Wood Door

It may not seem like a big deal, but your home’s front exterior wood doors are an important element of your “curb appeal,” and, needless to say, your welcome sign to your guests and even you when you arrive home.

If you’re in the process of building a home and are considering what kind of front entry door to put in, or you have a home already and want to replace your existing doors with new wooden doors, the DYI Network online has a few great tips for you.

Here’s an abbreviated version:

1. Decide What Type Of Door You Want – Wood, which is easier to manipulate and decorate;  Fiberglass, which is becoming popular for its resiliency and long wear-and-tear factor and energy efficiency; or steel, which carries security as its biggest selling factor.

2. Decide on a sealer.  Exterior doors are air sealed in two ways: Compression sealed doors use a flexible PVC gasket that fits along the four sides of an entry way, while magnetic seals cover the perimeter, which are more expensive but can be more efficient when it comes to keeping out the elements.

3. Decide on special Features:

  • Paneling — which refers to the sections of a door.
  • Louvering– good for helping air ventilation between rooms.
  • Glazing — This refers to the shiny exterior applied to some doors.
  • Transparencies– Glass or other see-through materials that are placed in a door for security, view or to let in outside light.
